In 1953, when Triest was still under the government of the Anglo-American troops, the Giardino di Via San Michele, a unique park made of terraces, stairways and statues, was inaugurated. Today it is a peaceful place from where you can either enjoy a fantastic view of the sea or read a book under the lush pergola.
Since Italy is a catholic country, it’s no wonder that there are so many symbols of devotion scattered throughout the cities and in the countryside, and even though most of them were built in the past century, they are still taken care of with much attention. Some people bring flowers and leave coins for the poor, while others say a prayer thinking of their loved ones.
The moment I sat down, I looked up. And I stayed like that for a few minutes, admiring this gorgeous frescoed ceiling and wondering if the original blue paint was really this bright. Maybe it was.
Built in the middle of the 19th century in the Neoclassic style and enriched by stuccoes and frescoes, the Brambilla-Morpurgo mansion used to be a private residence. Today it hosts the State Library of Trieste. Studying surrounded by this artwork cannot be more pleasant.
