Italy from the Inside

Feeling like Julia Roberts…

Antipasto prosciutto e mozzarella- Italy From The Inside

If you have seen the movie “Eat, pray and love” you probably remember the scene in which Julia Roberts was sitting on the floor in a Roman apartment eating a very light and simple meal all by herself. And yet, despite being in complete solitude, she was enjoying every bite of it.

Well, I felt pretty much like that the day I prepared this dish. I wasn’t sitting on the floor or anything like that, but I certainly was in complete solitude (a.k.a. kids were at school) and I was eating a very simple dish made of mozzarella di bufala, mini scamorza cheese, succulent black olives and the always winning grissini with prosciutto crudo. The basil was there for decoration, but eventually I attacked it and ate that as well.

These are what we call “le piccole gioie della vita” (the little joys of life).

Radicchio Rosso- Italy From The Inside

If the stracchino is something hard to find in the States, fortunately the radicchio rosso is widely available. Try it with some hard boiled eggs and black juicy olives. And obviously, always use Italian dressing (extra virgin olive oil, vinegar, salt and pepper. Period).

Bru… what?

Bruschetta rucola e stracchino- Italy From The Inside

If you are Italian and live in the States, you have probably shivered every time you heard the word bruschetta during a commercial. Here’s the thing: in Italian the syllable “sche” is pronounced “ske”, so you have to say brusKetta.

However, to make it fair, just know that Italians, for example, pronounce the famous Colgate toothpaste as Colgut-ay.

That said, if you happen to have some stracchino or crescenza (a soft and creamy cheese unfortunately still hard to find in the States), try it on some toasted bread and top it off with rucola. Buona brusKetta a tutti.
