If there’s one thing I miss from Italy that’s the sea. Yes, we are surrounded by water in Seattle (and I mean water coming from every direction, mainly vertically…), but it is not the same. The scent of the sea, its warmth and color are not the same. The taste of the fish is not the same either. I miss my calamari…
It is simply known as Castelletto di Muggia and it’s a treasure to discover. Built in 1374 as a military defense, the castle went through many vicissitudes until its complete dereliction in the 80s. But as any fascinating tale fortunately there’s a happy ending: in 1991 two artists purchased the castle and brought it back to its original beauty.
Today it is a private residence, but its doors open to musical events and special occasions. As a matter of fact this is the place where my in-laws celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary… with a golden cake.
I couldn’t think of a better place to do it.
Muggia, a small town in the outskirts of Trieste, is well known for its Carnival parade. For the past 61 years, 8 teams have competed to win the contest, and every year they attract thousands of people that patiently await at the sides of the main street to see the dances and jokes of the participants in disguise. It is a fun event, with music, dances and good food. And, as usual, it is a chance to meet friends and spend some cheerful moments together.
