The three gestures Italians do to ward off bad luck

The three gestures italians do to ward off bad luck

If you want to give a floral present to an Italian person, avoid giving chrysanthemums. These flowers are associated with death and are the flowers one brings to a funeral.
If nevertheless, you do happen to give chrysanthemums as a gift, don’t be surprised if the immediate reaction is one of the following:
• Touching any object made of iron, which is the Italian translation for “knock on wood.”
• A hand waving in your face, making the sign of the “horns” with one hand (by stretching out the index and the little finger).
• Touching the private parts.
Italian women will choose the first or second option, while Italian men will most certainly opt for the third one, as they believe that touching the testicles is the most effective way to attract the good luck and push the bad luck away. These actions are commonly made to deflect bad luck in general and do not only apply exclusively to the giving of the flower.

The two faces of the Italian carnival

February 13, 2018

Carnevale di Venezia

Sunday, when I learned that my friend Roberta went to Venice to see the carnival, I asked her to send me some photos of the event, one of which I’m now sharing with you. Il carnevale di Venezia is an experience that everyone should make at least once in a lifetime. I had the chance to see it a few years ago and loved it. I think it is such an elegant carnival where people come from everywhere to dress in gorgeous costumes and hide behind mysterious masks.

Then, there is the other face of the Italian carnival: the hilarious one.

I couldn’t stop laughing when my friend Gabriella sent me this picture from Trieste. Have you seen the guy on the right? He is wheeling on the Vespa!

Carnival has become an important event in Italy, even schools are closed during the festivities, which didn’t happen when I was younger (bummer).

What about you? Which kind of carnival do you like the most, the elegant one or the hilarious one? For me, it’s hard to decide…

The day after Christmas in Italy

Santo Stefano- Italy from the Inside

Did you know that in Italy the day after Christmas, also known as giorno di Santo Stefano, is a national holiday? However, it wasn’t always like that. Up until 1948 the day after Christmas was a regular working day, then the government decided to make the Christmas holiday longer and added an extra day to the festivities of the 25th of December. In spite of that Santo Stefano is an important figure for the Catholic Church since he was the first Christian martyr.
